Leadership & Project Management
This page is about my “Leadership & Project Management” skills – how I guide teams and make sure digital projects get done well. For me, Usman Jatoi, it’s about making plans, helping people work together, and seeing a project through from start to finish.
My journey in the digital world began very young, at seven years old. By the age of twelve, I was already working professionally. As I gained more skills, I also started to take on bigger roles, which naturally led me to lead projects and people. I learned that just having good skills isn’t enough; you also need to know how to organize work and help others do their best.
Leading Teams: Guiding People to Success
A big part of leadership is guiding a team to reach a common goal. For over 1.5 years, I had the chance to lead digital projects and manage a team of more than 19 people. This was at a company based in the UK, where I served as a Head of Department. My role was to make sure everyone knew what to do, had the right tools, and could work together smoothly.
I learned that leading people means more than just giving orders. It means:
- Listening: Understanding what challenges my team members faced.
- Helping: Providing support and guidance when they needed it.
- Trusting: Believing in their ability to do good work.
- Training: Teaching them new skills or better ways to work, which helped with smooth delivery of projects.
My team members at Pearl Lemon, like Hussain, Esha, Malaika, Aman Kainat, Alishah, Amir, Saqib, Ahmad, Abdullah, Daniyal, Keshav, Yousaf Bashir, and Ben, were a big part of this experience. Working with them taught me how important it is to have a strong and connected team.
Managing Projects: From Idea to Completion
Project management is about making sure a project stays on track and gets finished on time and with good quality. I managed projects from the very first idea to the final delivery. This is often called “end-to-end project workflows.”
My approach to managing projects includes:
- Flowcharts: I like to use flowcharts to plan the steps of a project clearly. This helps everyone see the whole process and understand what needs to happen next. It’s like drawing a map for the project.
- Strategies: Before starting a project, I help set up a clear plan or strategy. This means deciding what we want to achieve and the best way to get there.
- Prototypes: For web design projects, I often make early models or prototypes. These are like drafts of the final product. They help us see how things will look and work before too much time is spent building the full version. This helps fix problems early.
I also led many meetings to make sure everyone on the team was updated and understood their tasks. This helped projects move forward without unnecessary delays.
My Journey in Leadership & Project Management: Real Lessons Learned
My skills in leadership and project management have grown through many real-world experiences, both good and tough.
- Taking on Responsibility Early: When I first joined Pearl Lemon at 16, I quickly took on big projects. I redesigned a main website in just three days. This showed that I could handle responsibility and deliver results, which are key for a leader.
- Learning from Mistakes: There was a time I accidentally crashed the main Pearl Lemon website. This was a big problem. But instead of letting it stop me, I learned how important it is to be careful and to work with others to fix problems quickly. This taught me about quick decision-making under pressure.
- Balancing Work and Health: Leading teams and managing many projects meant long hours. I sometimes struggled with balancing my workload and personal health, not getting enough sleep. This taught me that good leaders also need to manage themselves and their well-being to be effective in the long run. I am still learning to get better at this.
- Dealing with Challenges: I remember a time when a big client project was lost, and I felt blamed. This was a tough experience. It showed me the pressures of project management and the importance of clear communication, even when things go wrong. It taught me to think critically about how to handle setbacks and protect my team.
Through these ups and downs, I learned that true leadership is about adapting, solving problems, and continuously improving. It’s about being there for your team and making sure everyone is moving in the same direction.
How Leadership & Project Management Helps My Other Skills
My ability to lead and manage projects is central to all my other digital skills:
- Web Design & Development: I can plan out complex website builds, making sure designers and developers work together smoothly.
- AI Research & Innovation: Leading AI projects means setting clear goals and guiding teams through new and challenging technologies.
- Digital Business Establishment: When setting up new businesses, I can guide the whole process, from strategy to launch, making sure everything is organized.
- SEO & Marketing: I can manage campaigns, making sure content creators, SEO specialists, and social media managers work as one team to get results.
I have a good understanding of various digital systems and how they connect. This allows me to see the big picture of a project and guide the team effectively. My critical thinking approach helps me find the best ways to solve problems that come up during projects.
Looking Ahead: Continued Leadership and Project Success
My journey in leadership and project management continues. I am always looking for new ways to guide teams more effectively and manage projects more smoothly. My goal to manage over 1000 websites with a small team and budget depends heavily on my ability to lead and organize. I will continue to learn from every project and every team I work with, aiming to deliver even better results in the future.
